Welcome to this drawing tutorial! Thanks for letting me share my love of drawing with you :D Feel free to use whatever tools and materials you like. I recommend drawing with a pencil when you start so you can make mistakes without stressing yourself out. Never be ashamed to delete ^.^
Step 1. Leadership circle
Start by drawing a large circle at the top of the page or where you want the orchid to stand. The size of the circle determines the size of the flower, as this guideline is the outer edge of the flower (shown in blue in the diagram below). Draw your guide a little lighter than I did because it will rub off later. I just drew them darker so you can see them clearly :D
Don't draw your circle perfectly round, try giving it a slightly irregular shape to give the flower a more organic shape.
Here's a video version of the tutorial if you'd like to see it drawn in real time.

Step 2. Center of the circle
Draw a small circle in the bottom half of the guide circle, making sure there is space around it and it doesn't touch the guide. Notice how the circle looks slightly flattened.
Step 3. First Petal
Now that we have the core structure and guidelines, we can start drawing the petals. The key to drawing petals is to remember that the lines on the edges of the petals lead away from the center. Think about how the sun's rays move away from the sun, we want the same effect with the outer edges of the petals. Our little friend, the sun in the chart, is here to remind us of this point!
Draw a line starting at the top right of the core and curving towards the target circle.
Step 4. Left Petal
Draw a line opposite the last one, starting at the top left of the nucleus and moving towards the circle pointing to the left. Try to capture a similar distance and angle between these lines as shown below. We draw these lines to help us plan the petals so they are balanced.
Level 5. Lower curve
Add a small curve to the bottom right corner of the core.
Step 6. Lower left corner
Add a small curved line at the bottom left of the core.
Step 7. Top of the Petal
Going back to the first line we drew, let's add a curved line coming out of the guide circle. This defines the top edge of the large petal on the right.
Level 8. Bottom border
Repeat the process for the bottom row, the row ends at the guide circle.
Step 9. Full Petal
Finish the petal by drawing a line that runs the length of the guide and connects the last two lines.
Step 10. Top left
Add the top border line for the left petal, ending at the guide circle.
Step 11. Full Petal
Finish the petal by adding a curved line along the guide (in pink) and connecting the bottom left line to the guide (in blue).
Step 12. Upper Petal
Add a curved line from the top of the left petal to the center of the guide circle. This petal is behind the other two, so part of its line is hidden. Watch out for this kind of overlap. We'll draw the petals on top first to create this layered effect.
Step 13. Upper right petal
Complete the top petal by curving towards the top edge of the right petal.
Step 14. Lower right petal
Add a very small petal to the bottom right corner, starting at the bottom midpoint of the core (the small circle we drew at the beginning), go down to the guide line (in blue) and curve the petal to the right (in Pink). .
Step 15. Lower left petal
Repeat for the left side, but start this line at the edge of the last petal, not the middle. This is another place where we find this beautiful overlay effect.
Step 16. Center line
Add definition to the core by adding a curved line that starts at the bottom left and moves up toward the middle.
Step 17. Full core
Add a curve for the opposite side that meets the endpoint of the last line. It should look like a small mountain in a small circle.
Step 18. Curved line
Add an extra line next to the middle circle below.
Level 19. Hurry
Add two sloping lines starting from the center of the flower and moving to the right (in blue), then add two more vertical lines (in pink). This angled stem shows the orchid pointing slightly to the left.
Level 20. Shutdown
Erase the outer lead and any other mistakes you want to correct. I use a malleable eraser, which is a Pudding/Play-Doh type eraser that you can mold into any shape you want. I prefer these erasers because they leave no shavings :D.
Step 21. Landline
Darken the lines that were accidentally lightened in the previous step. This is also a good place to correct curves that you are not happy with. Never be ashamed to erase things and try again, it's the only way to learn and get used to making mistakes and it makes drawing so much more fun.
Step 22. Rows of Petals
Add lines to the petals towards the center, these lines flow into the petal (reminiscent of little Sun Buddy :D).
Step 23. Shading Lines
Add more shading lines to the remaining petals and the stem where it connects to the flower. The stem shading indicates that the stem runs under the flower.
Step 24. Cleaning
Clean up the drawing by erasing all other errors and darkening the desired areas. Feel free to add more shading to the drawing if you like. I prefer minimal shading so I used that approach here, but play around and find what you like. If you want to experiment you can take a second sheet of paper, place it on top and draw your design against a window (so the light will help you see the lines below). This allows you to quickly make copies of the layout and play freely without worrying about messing up your original layout.
